For young children, the best way to help them to learn about their feelings is by reflecting their emotions back to them, in real time as you see them happening. The age/development of the child would dictate how much information you give them. This pack gives you some simple guidance about how to start to do this. This way of speaking with children about their feelings should start early but it remains effective for them as they mature.

However, as their brains mature, we can start to build upon the awareness that we have been nurturing, since their younger years, by helping them to analyse their feelings. What do they know about their feelings? What do they understand by different names for the same emotion? Can they link any early warning signs in their body, their environments or specific situations? Each card represents a key theme to explore with children that will help them to build up a profile of their emotional experiences.
