Saying Sorry: R.E.S.P.E.C.T.F.U.L Remedy Therapeutic Card Set

The R.E.S.P.E.C.T.F.U.L Remedy is a model Lynne has developed to support children and young people in learning how to prepare meaningful apologies. The tasks of this acronym can be used to directly help children learn the art of saying sorry in addition to being a format for them to go on to prepare a verbal or written apology.   

What is important in this model, is the inclusion about being prepared for the apology to be rejected. As much as we are taught to say sorry when we don’t always mean it, we are equally taught to accept an apology without feeling any desire to believe or forgive the person. Having someone reject an apology can come as a real shock and can instantly provoke lots of feelings of shame.  Although these feelings are natural and to an extent, can be unavoidable, it is important to think about an apology not being accepted in advance so children can practice healthy responses to this issue.  The larger card set can provide visual supports for the teaching of the model as well as being prompts children can refer to independently when preparing their own apologies.  The smaller size visuals could be incorporated into worksheets or journals.
