It is rare, in Lynne’s experience, to find a child whose anger has truly come out of nowhere.  Triggers might not look like things we would believe to be reasonable or would expect.

There might be some time between the trigger occurring and the actual angry outburst.  There might be a pattern of small triggers that led to one particular trigger being the final straw.  Either way, where there is an effect, there is usually a cause. It is our job to help children to feel safe and comfortable enough to help them identify, and then understand, what has happened to them. It can be really difficult for children to identify the correct feeling behind the anger.  It can be even harder for them to admit to it and be willing/able to explore this further. 

This pack contains 46 potential anger triggers, written on rock shapes. They cover some situational triggers (that can give some clues to the primary emotion) as well as some clear feelings triggers.  Quite often, children feel more willing and able to talk about situational triggers over the stronger harder feelings. Talking about situational triggers, however, clearly opens a door into the child’s internal world and will give you some opportunity to explore feelings.

The concept of the avalanche is to help the child to explore what leads up to their anger becoming overwhelming. What are the trigger rocks that, together, result in causing the angry avalanche - when everything just comes down crashing around them? What did the child have to cope with during the day, up to the point of their angry outburst?
